Joel Serrano will be in action again for the Puerto Rican national team this Thursday (6th), as the Boricuas begin their journey towards the 2026 World Cup. The debut will be against the El Salvador national team, away from home.

Puerto Rico has never participated in a FIFA World Cup, and this is certainly the main goal for the young Puerto Rican generation. Led by youngsters like Joel, who, despite his age, has extensive international experience, the team aims to make history for the country. “We want to make our names in history and bring this joy to Puerto Ricans,” said Joel. “Of course, the road is long, but we have a generation of talented players. We have our qualities,” he stated.

Last year, Puerto Rico was one win away from reaching the Gold Cup finals for the first time in their history. For the World Cup qualifiers, the Boricuas may benefit from the fact that Canada, the USA, and Mexico are already qualified, and the World Cup will now have 48 teams, thus opening more spots for other countries. “We will go step by step, game by game. If we give our best, we can dream, yes,” concluded the goalkeeper.

Serrano just won the Puerto Rico first division with Academia Quintana, winning the right to play in the CONCACAF Caribbean Shield with his club.
